Student Health Insurance Information

The image displays the phrase "Action Required" in bold white text against a blurred background of a building and trees with a red overlay.

Your student(s) received an email regarding the health insurance requirements for full-time* students attending both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses. All full-time students must have adequate health insurance coverage. To comply with this requirement, the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) has been billed to your student’s account. However, your student(s) have the option to waive/opt out of the SHIP by providing proof of a comprehensive Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant health insurance plan online to University Health Plans.

How to Waive or Enroll in the University Health Insurance

Advise your student(s) to visit the University Health Plans (UHP) Website* to either waive or enroll in the school-sponsored health insurance plan.

  • Waive: Remind your student(s) to complete the Waiver Form before the deadline of Monday, September 16, 2024.
  • Enroll: Remind your student(s) to complete the Enroll Form. If the form is not completed, your student(s) will automatically be enrolled and charged the student(s) health insurance premium.
    • If no action is taken to waive or enroll, your student(s) will receive weekly reminders directly from University Health Plans (UHP).
  • Get Access to Health Services! Enrolling before the waiver deadline date will allow your student(s) access to the benefits as early as the plan effective date of Thursday, August 15, 2024.
  • Get More Information About Student Health Insurance!

*The UHP Website is linked within the email your student(s) received.

Deadline to Waive or Enroll: Monday, September 16, 2024

To ensure compliance, students are automatically billed SHIP and will be enrolled if a waiver is not submitted online by Monday, September 16, 2024. Your student(s) will be responsible for paying the premium even if other health insurance coverage is available, if they fail to waive it by the deadline!

Additional Information

  • *Full-time students are defined as:
    • Undergraduate students enrolled in twelve (12) or more credits.
    • Graduate students enrolled in nine (9) or more credits.
  • International Students: All F-1 visa students, part-time or full-time, must also be insured with an ACA-compliant, filed, and approved policy in the U.S.
    • J-1 Visa Students: J-1 visa holders must meet the US Department of State’s health insurance minimums. Please see Mandatory Health Requirements on The Office of Global Engagement site and information on how to waive the university insurance. If your student’s health insurance plan meets all of the waiver requirements, they can request the International Student Waiver Form. International students do not have access to the online enrollment and waiver forms. Please advise your student to contact University Health Plans using the contact information provided in their email.
    • Health insurance plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits, provider networks, and/or coverage periods, and do not comply with the Montclair State University insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements.
  • If a waiver is not completed by Monday, September 16, 2024, your student(s) will be automatically enrolled in the Aetna University Health Insurance after the waiver deadline.
